Numerous accidents but few injuries reported on snowy roads

Woman injured in New Albany apartment fire; girls' sectionals postponed

Although all school districts in the area are closed for the day, emergency responders are staying busy.

Sgt. Jerry Goodin, of the Indiana State Police, said that between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m., ISP worked numerous slide-offs and multiple personal-injury accidents. Goodin said none of the injuries were serious.

He said most of the accidents between exits 0 and 12 on Interstate 65 and on Interstate 265. Accidents have also been reported on Ind. 62.

U.S. 150 in Floyd County was closed for a short time after a vehicle overturned, and a wrecker had to move the vehicle. No injuries were reported.

The Floyd County Sheriff’s Department had only worked four accidents as of 11 a.m., but there were no injuries.

“I think most people are staying in,” Sheriff Darrell Mills said.

The New Albany Police Department has worked 10 property-damage accidents but none serious, according to a dispatcher.

One woman was reportedly burned in an apartment fire on Tabor Court in New Albany at about 5:10 a.m. on Tuesday. Her condition or identity was not immediately available.

The Jeffersonville Police Department reported working 15 to 20 accidents as of 11 a.m. Tuesday. No injuries were reported. A dispatcher for the Clark County police stated that there had been a steady number of accidents but no serious accidents.

In a press release Tuesday morning, Jeffersonville Mayor Tom Galligan urged people to avoid driving on the roads.

“We've been plowing and salting streets since last night,” said Galligan. “But the snow is still coming down and driving is hazardous. The safe, smart thing to do is to stay where you are and let our crews get the streets clean as quickly as possible.”

Area schools closed their doors, as well as Indiana University Southeast and Ivy Tech Community College. New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School Corp. extracurricular activities and all high school events, including practices at Greater Clark County schools are canceled for Tuesday. However, Greater Clark still plans to hold its scheduled school board meeting Tuesday night.

Girls’ basketball sectional play set for tonight in the area has been postponed, with rescheduling information not yet determined..

About five inches of snow had fallen on Clark and Floyd counties as of 11 a.m. Cold air will move into the region Tuesday night, and temperatures will plummet causing wet and slushy roads to refreeze. Gusty winds this afternoon could take wind chills into the teens.

ISP released the following road conditions as of mid-morning on Tuesday:

• I-65, right lane, has been cleared of snow but the road is still ice covered and extremely slick.

• I-65, left lane, is snow and ice covered and extremely slick.

• I-64, right lane, has been cleared of snow but the road is still ice covered and extremely slick.

• I-64, left lane, is snow and ice covered and extremely slick.

• State and U.S. Highways are snow and ice covered and extremely slick.

• Secondary roads, (county roads) are snow and ice covered with snow and ice cover depending on the county you are in. These county roads are extremely slick and hazardous.
