Polly’s Freeze turning 60

Landmark still a favorite for Southern Indiana residents

FLOYD COUNTY — Cara Rothrock didn’t know what she was walking into 19 years ago.

That is when she walked in Polly’s Freeze as a teenager looking for a summer job. As it turned out, she never left.

Rothrock worked at the ice cream and food stand through high school and college and remained there once she became a teacher. Today she and her husband Mike are running the facility located at 5242 Ind. 62 in Floyd County.

Donna and Paul Eisert were looking to retire and offered to sell the business to the Rothrocks in 2009.

“We have been in the business a long time,” said Rothrock, who serves as the general manager. “It’s a unique place.”

Unique indeed. Elmer and Polly Gleitz opened up the location in 1952 and turned the vacant gas station into Polly’s Freeze. They ran the business for several years before turning it over to their three children —  George, Donna and Delores — according to Polly’s website. Donna and her husband Paul ran the business before deciding to retire in 2009.

Polly’s Freeze is much more than just an ice cream shop. The food stand serves several different food items including cheeseburgers, fish & chips, barbecue and chicken tenders.

“If we just served ice cream I think it would be a hard sell because we are out of the way,” Rothrock said. “But we offer a whole menu.”

There are also several picnic tables located around Polly’s Freeze where customers can enjoy their food or ice cream outdoors.

“We haven’t changed all that much,” Rothrock said. “It’s a tradition. We have some very loyal customers who have been coming back here year after year.”

Polly’s Freeze will be celebrating all weekend with events and specials. Beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, ice cream cones will be sold for 60 cents and on Sunday, ice cream sundaes will be sold for 60 cents.

From 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, there will be face painting for children and Balloons by Bonkers. Polly the Parrot will also be on location both days.

“We are looking forward to it,” Rothrock said.

Polly’s Freeze is located one mile from the Georgetown/Edwardsville exit off Interstate 64. At the bottom of the exit ramp, turn left and Polly’s Freeze will be on the right.
