Author of ‘One Pint at a Time’ coming to New Albany Sept. 18

NEW ALBANY — The latest book published by the Indiana Historical Society Press features the New Albanian Brewing Co.

“Indiana: One Pint at a Time” was written by Douglas Wissing, of Bloomington, and focuses on craft breweries throughout the state, while also paying homage to the roots of Indiana brewing, which date back to 1816. Located at 415 Bank Street, NABC’s Bank Street Brewhouse and its Public House and Pizzeria at 3312 Plaza Drive receive some ink from Wissing.

“One Pint at a Time” details the history of NABC, which is owned by Roger Baylor, Amy Baylor and Kate Lewison.

Roger Baylor said he hasn’t had a chance to read the book yet but plans to do so. He said most younger people relate to microbreweries and the state’s current brewing industry that began in 1990.

“The generation that cared about the breweries explored in [Wissing’s] book has been gone for a while,” he said. “Older folks know Bud and Miller, and that’s about all.”

Baylor said that virtually all Indiana breweries followed the German lead of producing beer after the 1850s, but that has changed lately.

“Now few, including NABC, are so narrowly confined,” he said. “Our mission is to draw from all brewing influences, and to use these in classic melting-pot fashion to create our own vibe.”

According to Wissing’s work, Indiana craft breweries produced more than 28,000 barrels of beer in 2007. The book is available locally at Destinations Booksellers, located at 604 E. Spring St. in downtown New Albany. The bookstore is hosting an author event featuring Wissing Sept. 18. It will do the same Aug. 7 for author Rita Kohn, who wrote “True Brew: A Guide to Craft Beer in Indiana.”

Kohn’s work also features a section on NABC.

Wissing also wrote “Pioneer in Tibet: The Life and Perils of Dr. Albert Shelton.”
