Paul’s One World Café open

Restaurant features Mexican cuisine and more

A new restaurant has opened in downtown New Albany, as Paul’s One World Café is serving lunch, dinner and homemade desserts at 133 E. Market St.

The owner is Paul Chiquito, who formerly operated Chiquito’s along Cherry Street. Paul’s One World Café is located in the building that once housed the Market Street Fish House, which has now combined with Connor’s Place also located along Market Street.

Chiquito is a Mexican chef, but in addition to his standard dishes, he’s offering a wide selection of world cuisines. It’s a full-service establishment with customers grabbing a seat and being waited on. Chiquito said he hopes to add a liquor license in a few months.

Right now he’s concentrated on the food: Burritos, turkey sandwiches and a variety of fish entrees are among the daily specials Paul’s One World Café features.

The restaurant is open daily from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., and customers can choose from a rotating lunch special priced at less than $5.

“Everything we have, we make from scratch,” Chiquito said.

Matt and Jessica Bergman own the building as well as the Toast on Market building next door to Paul’s One World Café.

Matt Bergman believes Paul’s One World Café will be a welcomed addition to a blossoming downtown restaurant district.

“Jessica and I have been very committed to building some sort of sustainable community in New Albany,” he said.

“It’s been nice to see all this progress, from Toast to Wick’s, to Patticakes and Pies to the Bank Street Brewhouse, they’re all places you feel comfortable in and they still have a local flair to them and not an urban sprawl feel.”

Chiquito favored the Market Street spot as it’s enveloped within the business district, which suits his drive to make Paul’s One World Café a destination for the lunch crowd.

“I like it downtown because everything is going on here right now,” Chiquito said.
