CLARK COUNTY —
A Sellersburg man was arrested for stealing from his best friend, Clark County Sheriff’s Department deputies said.
Bradley Keith Mangels, 33, of Nevada Drive, was arrested Monday afternoon when deputies caught up with him after his whereabouts were unknown for nearly four weeks. Mangels was taken into custody outside of his room at Value Place on Independence Court in Clarksville, near U.S. 31. He was arrested for taking belongings from a shed located on the property of his friend who resides on East St. Joe Road in Sellersburg.
The friend received a telephone call from Mangels’ ex-wife Aug. 13 informing him that Mangels had left a box of his belongings at her house, deputies said. Police said the man had not known prior to receiving the phone call that his property had been burglarized.
On Aug. 14, Sellersburg police arrested Mangels for driving with a suspended license. Officers later located other property belonging to the same victim in Mangels’ vehicle.
An investigation led Clark County deputies to Mangels’ motel room Tuesday when he was preliminarily charged with burglary, a class C felony, and theft, a class D felony. During the arrest, Mangels told deputies that he had purchased the property found in his vehicle from an unknown person while at a bar in Charlestown, deputies said.
When asked what the probability was that he would be confronted by someone at a bar in Charlestown selling stolen property that belonged to his friend, Mangels responded, “slim,” deputies said.
Deputies also said that Mangels said he had no knowledge of the stolen property discovered in the box that he is accused of taking to the home of his ex-wife.
Mangels also has other current charges in Clark County, according to a search of online court records. He is facing a class D felony of domestic battery committed in the presence of a child less than 16 years old.
