New Albany man charged with attempted murder

Leroy D. Brown was arrested Thursday in Sellersburg following Tuesday shooting in New Albany

NEW ALBANY — A New Albany man has been preliminarily charged with the attempted murder of man who was shot in the face Tuesday near Bono Road, police said.

Leroy D. Brown, 26, of the 1100 block of Crystal Avenue, was arrested about 7 p.m. Thursday in a mobile home on Jefferson Boulevard in Sellersburg.

The New Albany Police Department reported that officers, who were assisted by the Sellersburg police, surrounded the mobile home and spoke to Brown over the phone before the arrest was made. Brown did not resist arrest after he exited the home and was subsequently taken into custody, police reported.

After being preliminarily charged with the class A felony, Brown was booked into the Floyd County Jail.

His arrest follows a shooting that took place about 9 p.m. Tuesday in the vicinity of Parkview-Broadmeade property, a New Albany Housing Authority community. During the incident, Allen M. Vancliff Jr., 25, of New Albany was shot once in the face, police reported.

After being shot, Vancliff entered nearby Zack’s Food Mart on Bono Road and asked a employee to contact police. Vancliff was later taken to Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services where he was treated and has since been released.

Police reported that Vancliff sustained facial and oral injuries from the incident.

Vancliff told investigators he lives in the 200 block of Erni Avenue, near where the shooting occurred.

Maj. Keith Whitlow with NAPD said officers deserve credit for locating the suspect and making the arrest.

“The arrest resulted from good investigatory police work,” he said. “Investigators followed up leads and collected evidence that was needed to make the arrest.”

Police have not disclosed the exact location of the shooting and are still trying to determine the motive. Whitlow said the investigation is continuing in an effort to strengthen the case.

If found guilty of the attempted murder charge, Brown will face a maximum penalty of 50 years in the Indiana Department of Correction.
