JEFFERSONVILLE — LifeSpring Inc. announced a two-year, $1.4 million contract with the Indiana Department of Mental Health and Addiction which will expand service at the agency’s Turning Point Center.
The center, located on Sharon Drive, provides medically supervised detoxification services for those with drug or alcohol addictions and mental health issues. It’s a 27-bed facility, however because of restrictions on traditional funding streams, it typically only serves about nine clients, a press release from LifeSpring says.
The award means that more people in need of the service, not just those who can afford it, will be treated, said Beth Keeney, development and grants director for the agency. The state will pay for the treatment and LifeSpring will provide it. Keeney said it is somewhat expensive, being as it includes room and board as well as counseling.
The award from the state will provide subsidies for 18 beds to serve clients unable to pay for treatment. Keeney noted that it’s not the first time such a contract had been awarded. The agency had a similar one in 2006 and 2007, she said.
“We’re just thrilled to provide this service again,” she said.
The service will be given to LifeSpring clients based on need, provided the individual meets diagnostic criteria and there is bed availability.
“LifeSpring, and its board of directors, is extremely pleased to be able to offer this additional resource for substance abuse treatment to our community,” LifeSpring President and Chief Executive Officer Terry L. Stawar said in the release. “We hope to work closely with local courts and correctional programs to maximize the effectiveness of these new treatment opportunities.”
