JEFFERSONVILLE —
The Indiana State Police reported that Jeffersonville Police officer Amber Tharp was not responsible for the incident that resulted in her crashing a patrol car Monday on Holmans Lane near Charlestown Pike.
ISP was contacted to complete an incident report, which lists the primary cause of the incident as “[vehicle] engine failure or defective,” and the driver’s contributing circumstance as “none.”
ISP reported the surface of the roadway was wet at the time of the accident.
Tharp was traveling south on the roadway about 2 p.m. in response to a call with the patrol vehicle’s lights and sirens activated when she lost control of the vehicle. According the incident report, Tharp had passed a vehicle in front of her, and as she re-entered the southbound lane of Holmans Lane the vehicle’s engine malfunctioned causing the steering mechanism to lock. The patrol car then crossed the oncoming lane of traffic, according to the accident report, and entered a ditch.
After entering the ditch adjacent to the road, the patrol car struck an earth embankment head on, spun around 180 degrees and continued to slide about 80 feet until striking a utility pole owned by Duke Energy.
Tharp was transported to Clark Memorial Hospital, but suffered no significant injuries, Jeffersonville police said. The traveling speed before Tharp lost control of the vehicle was not investigated, ISP officials said.
Tharp was traveling in a 2005 Ford Crown Victoria. ISP reported the estimated damage to the vehicle from $10,001 to $25,000.
