JEFFERSONVILLE —
A bridge closure and concerns over blasting were heard at a brief Board of Public Works meeting Wednesday.
Danielle Jostes, a manager with Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, requested the board approve the closure of the Clark Memorial Bridge from 12:30 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28.
The bridge would be shut down for a non-competitive 5K fundraising walk for the American Cancer Society.
“Last year we had 14,000 walkers and raised $700,000 for breast cancer,” Jostes said.
But she added that last year participants did not walk across the Clark Memorial Bridge — also known as the Second Street Bridge, which had previously been the route for the 5K, due to the closure of the Sherman Minton Bridge.
“Our participants absolutely love it,” she said of walking over the Second Street Bridge.
The closure was already approved by Louisville and unanimously approved by Jeffersonville Wednesday.
HOUSE SHAKING
Linda Allen, a Basswood Court resident, came to the public works meeting to ask if there was anything the city could do about blasting at a rock quarry near her home.
“When I’m in my house it feels like I’m at Fort Knox,” she said.
She added she has lived in the home since 2001 and the blasting has caused damage.
City Attorney Les Merkley said, “unfortunately, there’s not a whole lot the city can do because it’s zoned for that.”
City Councilwoman and Board of Public Works Member Lisa Gill suggested Allen go to the quarry to get a meter that can be attached to the house to measure how the blasting is affecting the home.
The city agreed to help Allen work with the quarry to try and resolve the issues.
