Library hosting open house
Those interested in genealogy can attend the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library’s open house to meet Matt Eidem, who will be working in the Indiana Room to preserve and expand resources.
The event begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, near the Indiana Room inside the library, 180 W. Spring St., New Albany.
Refreshments will be served.
Weight loss seminar is Thursday
Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services is offering a free weight loss surgery informational seminar from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 26, at the hospital’s Paris Health Education Center in New Albany. Learn about the gastric banding surgery option and support services offered by the Floyd Memorial Weight Management Center.

Open house to mark store’s expansion
Sophie’s Hope Thrift Shoppe has expanded and has been able to more than double its size in six months. A grand reopening to celebrate the new space will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 29, at 3808 E. 10th St., Jeffersonville.
There will be free hot dogs and lots of fun for everyone. Donations will be accepted, but not mandatory. Proceeds go to Southern Indiana Animal Rescue to help meet the needs of rescued animals. Vendors space is available for $35 per month.

CHARLESTOWN
Photography contest open
Charlestown State Park’s sixth-annual Amateur Photography Contest is accepting entries at the park gate and office during open hours now through Aug. 3. All amateur photographers are encouraged to enter. Forms are available at the Charlestown State Park office.
All photographs must have been taken of or in Charlestown State Park during 2012. Individuals can submit a total of three photos from one or any combination of the three categories: park history; nature and wildlife; programs and family fun.
Winners will receive a 2013 Annual DNR Park Pass. Results and all photographs will be on display at the Park Office on Aug. 4. The public is encouraged to stop by and vote for their favorite photograph at that time.
GEORGETOWN
Georgetown hosting public hearing
The town of Georgetown will hold a public meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, at the Georgetown Optimist Club.
The purpose of the meeting is to consider additional appropriations.
CLARK COUNTY
Showcase of Fashions set
The annual Showcase of Fashions, sponsored by the Clark County Extension Homemakers and Purdue Extension — Clark County is scheduled for 2 p.m., Saturday, July 28.
This year’s location will be the Clark County REMC on Ind. 60 in Sellersburg.
The contest is for individuals who sew and are interested in competing at the county and state level. The state contest is held in conjunction with the Indiana State Fair which is held in August each year. The showcase is open to all Clark County residents. Garments modeled must have been made after Sept. 1, 2010.
Entry forms are available at the Purdue Extension Office in Clark County. Questions should be directed to Joyce Dickson, contest chairman at 812-294-4087 or Reba Colley, Extension Educator, at 812-256-4591. Entry forms are due Thursday, July 26.
LOUISVILLE
Publishing group seeks writers
Local independent press Typecast Publishing has launched its Inspiration Institute, which aims to gather book lovers and writers in some of the Louisville area’s most stimulating settings, including the Falls of the Ohio State Park and Cave Hill Cemetery, for both free and ticketed events.
The Natural Habitat Reading Series is a free, public event held the last Thursday of every month in the summer and features homegrown writers, up-and-comers and Guggenheim fellows reading their best work. The next event will be 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 26, at Quills Coffee’s U of L location.
Typecast offers four ticketed writing workshops (open to writers of all genres). The Natural Habitat Workshop will be from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 4 at the Falls of the Ohio, and the Grave Matters Workshop will be from 9 a.m. to 12 noon July 28 and Aug. 11 at Cave Hill Cemetery.
Attendees receive a blank Inspiration Institute journal, a Typecast magazine or book and a cold beverage. Typecast Publishing editors will lead a talk on submitting work, the publishing industry and what editors look for. For more information visit typecastpublishing.com.
