Kick-off for cancer study coming to Clark County

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — The American Cancer Society and the YMCA of Southern Indiana will host a Cancer Prevention Study-3 Community Champion Kick-off on Wednesday morning to recruit Clark County residents interested in spreading the word about the importance of participating in a historic nationwide study that will help researchers better understand the genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that cause or prevent cancer.

At the event, participants will receive information needed to educate community members about the study and how they can make an appointment to enroll in the study between March 19-20. Enrollment is being made possible in partnership with Baptist Hospital East, Floyd Memorial Hospital and the YMCA of Southern Indiana — Clark County Branch.

Registration starts at 7:30 p.m. and a one-hour program follows at 8, Wednesday, Jan. 23, at YMCA of Southern Indiana — Clark County Branch, multipurpose room, 4812 Hamburg Pike, Jeffersonville.

Speakers will include Mayor Mike Moore, who is a cancer survivor, Denis Enix of the YMCA, Matthew Vamvas of the American Cancer Society, and Chad Boseker, a cancer survivor.

THE STUDY

To better understand the lifestyle, environmental and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer, the American Cancer Society’s Department of Epidemiology & Surveillance Research is recruiting 300,000 adults across the U.S. and Puerto Rico for a new research study, the Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3).

Individuals may choose to enroll in the study if they are willing to make a long-term commitment to the study (which involves completing follow-up surveys periodically over the next 20 to 30 years), are between the ages of 30 and 65 years old and have never been diagnosed with cancer.

Whether you are a cancer survivor, caregiver or are interested in honoring a friend or loved one who has battled cancer, anyone can serve as a CPS-3 community champion.
