Church hosting chicken dinner
Tunnel Hill Christian Church, 5105 Old Georgetown Road, Georgetown, will sponsor a barbecue chicken dinner, dine-in family style or take out from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, at the church.
Adult dinners are $8, children 6 to 10, $4 and five and under are free.
The day will feature great music, games for the kids and shopping for kids of all ages. There will be a Cane Ridge worship service outside in the shelter house starting at 10 a.m.

Theatre group to perform at museum
The Howard Steamboat Museum, 1101 E. Market St., Jeffersonville, will host a presentation of “Down by the River,” a traveling theatre performance courtesy of the Rivers Institute at Hanover College. Showtime is 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, at the museum. Suggested donation is $ 5.
The production features tales of Indiana and Ohio River history, folklore and science, as well as musical performances and audience participation. Audiences will learn about the first steamboat trip down the Ohio in 1811 and hear stories about spooky places like Indianapolis’ House of Blue Lights, the Ten Penny Bridge in Charlestown or the Devil’s Elbow in Osgood. The show will be family friendly.

Events to honor Julia Vissing
Ten years ago, William and Vicki Vissing lost their daughter, Julia Kay Vissing, in a traffic accident.
To honor and remember her, a memorial Mass will be celebrated at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, At St. Augustine Catholic Church, 315 E. Chestnut St., Jeffersonville. Family, friends and all who were touched by Julia’s presence are invited to attend.
The public also is invited to play in, donate to or attend the 10th and final Julia Vissing golf benefit and auction that will be held at Covered Bridge Golf Club on Aug. 10. Shotgun start is at 1 p.m. Proceeds will benefit Sacred Heart School in Jeffersonville and Presentation Academy in Louisville — Julia’s alma mater. Miss Harvest Homecoming pageant Saturday
The 2012 Miss Harvest Homecoming Scholarship Pageant will begin at 6:30 p.m. today, Aug. 4, at Floyd Central High School’s auditorium.

WW II planes to visit
The Wings of Freedom Tour of the WW II Vintage Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, Consolidated B-24 Liberator and North American P-51 Mustang Announce Unique Display at Clark Regional Airport, 7001 Airport Drive, Sellersburg, from Aug. 6 to Aug. 8.
Visitors are invited to explore the aircraft inside and out — $12 for adults and $6 for children under 12 is requested for access to up-close viewing and tours through the inside of the aircraft. WW II veterans can tour through the aircraft at no cost. Visitors may also experience the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to actually take a 30-minute flight aboard these rare aircraft. Flights on either the B-17 or B-24 are $425 per person. P-51 flights are $2,200 for a half hour and $3,200 for a full hour. For reservations and information on flight experiences call 800-568-8924.
Hours of ground tours and display are 2 to 5 p.m. Monday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday. The 30-minute flight experiences are normally scheduled before and after the ground tour times above.

Optimists hosting golf tourney
The Optimist Club of Clarksville will host a parent/child golf tournament Aug. 12 at Wooded View Golf Course, 2404 Greentree North, in Clarksville. Tee times begin at noon and the format will be alternate shot.
There will be 18-hole and 9-hole divisions. Players will be grouped and prizes awarded to seven age groups. The entry fee is $40 per team for the 18-hole division and $30 per team for the 9-hole division. Entry fee includes greens fees, cookout after play, trophies, and door prizes.

FMH offering bone, joint seminar
Floyd Memorial Hospital is offering a free bone and joint pain seminar from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, in the Paris Health Education Center, 1850 State St., New Albany.
This is an opportunity for those who are having trouble with activities like walking, golf, bowling, swimming and gardening due to pain in the knees or hips to learn about advanced treatments that may offer dramatic relief. An orthopedic surgeon and nurse will discuss medications and exercise, and explain the latest technology for joint replacement surgery.
AARP meeting upcoming
The Floyd County AARP chapter will meet at noon Friday, Aug. 10, at St. John’s Church at the corner of 13th and Elm Streets, New Albany, for a covered dish luncheon. A ham will be provided.
