‘Brains’ battle coming to schools

Parkview and River Valley middle schools are challenging each other this spring to see which school can achieve the highest overall ISTEP+ scores.

As an incentive, the school that has the highest number of pass and pass-plus on ISTEP+ tests will win a carnival-like field day this spring.

Greater Clark County Schools wants to show community pride by encouraging the youth to perform well academically. The school system is asking local businesses to become involved with promoting academic excellence in Jeffersonville.

Areas businesses can help by advertising the competition on their marquee or signs inside their places of business and make a monetary contribution to offset the cost of the traveling trophy, field day and prizes. If you would like to make a contribution or donation, contact Susan Wilcox at 288-4844 ext. 341.

Free tax help sites announced

Rep. Baron Hill, D-Ind., is encouraging applicable Southern Indiana residents to take advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit, or EITC. It was expanded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to cover three or more children and increased the amount of EITC benefits. Families making up to $48,000 may qualify for the credit, which may be worth more than $5,600, a press release says.

“A little help can go a long way during these tough economic times,” Hill said in the release. “Because of the recovery act’s temporary EITC expansion, it is likely that there are taxpayers who may be eligible for the EITC for the first time.

“I encourage my constituents to take advantage of free tax preparation sites and resources to make sure that they receive the benefits they deserve this tax filing season.”

Below is a list of free tax preparation assistance sites in the area, primarily those organized by the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program and the American Association of Retired Persons. The income cut-off for free assistance is $49,000. Taxpayers seeking assistance are encouraged to call 800-829-1040 before visiting a location.
