Tailgate dinner is tonight

DePauw United Methodist Church, across from New Albany High School, will hold a tailgate dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Jan. 27, before the New Albany basketball game.

The menu will include ham, baked beans, corn pudding, homemade cole slaw, dessert and a drink. The price is $7 for adults and $3 for children 6 to 12 years old. Children 5 and younger eat free. Call 812-945-6537 for more information or for carry-out orders.

A free seminar: “Understanding Lower Back Pain, Common Conditions and Treatment” will be held from 6 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 31, at Floyd Memorial Paris Health Education Center, Classrooms 3 and 4, 1850 State St., New Albany.

Aebersold Jazz Quartet to perform

The Jamey Aebersold Jazz Quartet will perform in the Strassweg Auditorium of the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7.  

In addition to Aebersold, who will be playing alto saxophone, the Quartet will include Steve Allee on piano, Tyrone Wheeler on bass and Jonathan Higgins on the drums.

Fundraiser for Bliss House coming up

The Center for Lay Ministries/Bliss House will hold its annual Bliss House fundraiser Feb. 11. This year the event will be Valentine Bliss — a dinner, silent auction, short ceremony and dance with a live band, Over Gloria.

The public is invited to support and attend this Valentine’s-themed event to support the mission of the Bliss House. The Bliss House Program is for Southern Indiana women in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. Valentine Bliss is the primary fundraiser for the Bliss House and a limited number of tickets are available. Sponsorships also are available. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. at First Christian Church Grace Center at 3209 Middle Road, Jeffersonville. Tickets are $50 p/person and reservation deadline has been extended to Feb. 7. Sacred Heart holding open house

Sacred Heart School, 1842 E. Eighth St., Jeffersonville, will sponsor an open house, from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, at the school.

Classes are provided for preschool through grade eight and the school is now accepting Indiana Choice vouchers.



JROTC launching booster club

Jeffersonville High School JROTC announced a newly established booster club. The first booster club meeting will be at 7 p.m. tonight, Jan. 27, in the Jeffersonville High School JROTC classroom, 2315 Allison Lane.

The meeting is open to the community.



’37 Flood the topic of library talk

Seventy five years ago, the Ohio River Valley was plunged underwater by the Great Flood of 1937. Jeffersonville Township Public Library, 211 E. Court Ave., Jeffersonville, will host Rick Bell as he presents The 75th Anniversary of the Great Flood of 1937, courtesy of The Rivers Institute at Hanover College.

Bell’s presentation from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28,  will tell the story of life during the flood, of the trials and tribulations along with the many triumphs.

Church offering pancake day

Wall Street United Methodist Church, 240 Wall St., Jeffersonville, will sponsor a pancake day from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 28, at the church.

The cost for all-you-can-eat pancakes is $5 for adults, children 12 and younger, $2.50.

Yoga class coming to library

Tami Sue Combs of Let’s Do Yoga will be at the Jeffersonville Township Public Library, 211 E. Court Ave., Jeffersonville, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 28, to teach a class on gentle yoga, otherwise referred to as chair yoga.

Gentle yoga involves the use of a chair for seated exercises, but this same chair can also serve as support for many of the standing poses. This type of yoga enhances the well-being of most individuals, but it is especially beneficial for seniors. For this class, preregistration is required and everyone should dress comfortably.
