> SOUTHERN INDIANA — CLARK COUNTY

ISP plans DWI checkpoint

The Indiana State Police Post at Sellersburg will conduct a driving under the influence enforcement checkpoint in Clark County beginning in the evening hours of Wednesday, Aug. 29, and ending in the early morning hours of Aug. 30.

Motorists that are not impaired can expect only short delays of two to three minutes while passing through the check point.



FLOYD COUNTY

Mentors needed for program

Mentor volunteers are needed for the Mentor Mii program of New Albany Floyd County Schools.

Orientation for new volunteers will be from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, at the Educational Services Center, 2808 Grant Line Road, New Albany.

Floyd Co. Historical Society to meet

The Floyd County Historical Society, in collaboration with the Carnegie Center for Art & History, will hold its August meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, in the Elsa Strassweg Auditorium of the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library.

David Condra will present a program titled, “George W. Morrison, 19th Century Portrait and Landscape Artist.”

The meeting is free and open to the public.



NEW ALBANY

Church’s homecoming is Sunday

The 138th annual homecoming for Embury United Methodist Church, 4025 Five Mile Lane, New Albany, will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, at the regular morning worship service.

At noon, a luncheon of hamburgers, hot dogs and sides will be enjoyed and at 1 p.m., Debra Stone will entertain and Dale Huff will bring the homecoming message.



Church offering tutoring

The Crossing Christian Church, formerly located at 3602 Northgate Court, Suite 9, New Albany, will offer free tutoring sessions to children grades kindergarten through 12th grade at its new location, 4025 Earnings Way, New Albany.

Experienced adults and college students are ready to assist youth who need extra help with study skills or with a particular subject. The sessions will be offered on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 to  7 p.m. at the church beginning Tuesday, Sept. 4.

CLARKSVILLE

Clarksville hosting Touch-A-Truck

Clarksville Parks and Recreation will sponsor the 14th annual Touch-A-Truck and Community Yard Sale on Saturday, Aug. 25, in Colgate Park. Touch-A-Truck runs from 10 a.m. until noon, but the yard sale will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Touch-A-Truck is a chance for children to get up close and personal with their favorite big rig. A fire truck, police car, school bus and many other vehicles will be on display for children to look at, explore and possibly climb on and sit inside the trucks they see every day on the roads.

The yard sale requires registration. Cost to participate is $25 per space. Colgate Park is located at 800 S. Clark Boulevard next to the Clarksville Family Aquatic Center. The Optimist Club will sell concessions. To register for the yard sale or for more information call 812-283-5313 or e-mail.
