Dollar General hosting grand opening
The Dollar General store newly opened at 1715 Charlestown-New Albany Road in Jeffersonville will host a grand opening starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, a press release from the company says.
At the event, customers will enjoy special deals and free prizes. The first 50 shoppers at the store will receive a $10 Dollar General gift card and the first 200 shoppers will receive a Dollar General tote bag, among other giveaways.
The 9,100-square-foot store features a fresh layout, designed to make shopping simple for customers. Some of the store’s new features include seasonal products featured in the center of the store, easily recognizable departments with visible signage and coolers located at the front of the store, the release says.
Dollar General offers a focused selection of national brands and private brands of food, housewares, seasonal items, cleaning supplies, basic apparel and health and beauty care products.

Wiseheart to meet public this week
Lee Ann Wiseheart, Republican candidate for Indiana Senate District 46, invites the public to a pair of meet the candidate events today and Thursday.
The first will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Clark County Republican Party headquarters, 2946 E. 10th Street in Jeffersonville. The second is from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Floyd County Republican Party headquarters, 3800 Grant Line Road in New Albany.
The free events are hosted by the Team Wiseheart committee.
Wiseheart, vice-president of the New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated Schools Corp. Board of Trustees, will talk with attendees and give a speech at the events. Light food and beverages will be served.
“I view my campaign as an interview with the people so I encourage citizens to attend and to bring family and friends,” she said in a press release. “I am a strong voice for lower taxes and government efficiency. I am also committed to helping recruit new jobs and investment to District 46.”

Local WIC program open to families
The Clark County WIC — Women, Infants and Children — Program is a federally funded U.S. Department of Agriculture nutrition program that offers health education, nutritious foods and other services, free of charge, to Indiana residents who qualify.
It is sponsored through New Hope Services Inc., at New Hope Commons, 1302 Wall St., Jeffersonville.
WIC’s goal is to keep pregnant women, infants and children under 5 years of age healthy. This goal is accomplished by offering personalized nutrition consults, checks to buy healthy food and referrals for medical and dental care and other tips to improve family health.
WIC offers each eligible family member an average of $61 in food checks, every month, for items such as milk, cheese, eggs, cereal, juice, fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain breads and much more to provide the essential nutrients to help pregnant women and children grow and live a healthy life.
WIC is for all kinds of families with children or newly pregnant women, grandparents raising grandchildren, foster parents or other legal guardians of children under 5. Verification of U.S. citizenship is not required for WIC eligibility.

IUS hosting International Festival
International cuisine will be the main dish at the 15th-annual International Festival from 5 to 8 p.m. March 2 at in the Hoosier Room in University Center at Indiana University Southeast, 4201 Grant Line Road, New Albany.
The festival will be catered by IUS’ new chef, Dylan Starkey, an Indiana University graduate in anthropology and former owner of the Blue Peppermill Café in Clarksville. He has worked at several well-known restaurants in the area including Azalea’s, Fuzzy Zoeller’s Covered Bridge and the Derby Café at Churchill Downs.
Guests will be served a four-course sampling of international fare, including dishes such as black bean falafels with tzatziki sauce, kimchi, Mediterranean couscous, spicy ground nut stew, chicken adobo, baklava and crème brulee.
Entertainment will include the St. Xavier High School Jungle Drummers, Flamenco Louisville and Heartstrings Celtic band. Proceeds will benefit IUS’ overseas study scholarships.
Tickets are $7 for general admission and $5 for students and senior citizens; prepurchase tickets at the IUS Information Desk in University Center; or purchase tickets at the door; free is parking available.
