Resident to deliver gifts to Ecuador
A Jeffersonville resident will be leaving Sunday for Ecuador to deliver gift-filled shoeboxes to needy children in Ecuador.
Andrea Roach, along with other staff and volunteers, will distribute the boxes early next week as part of Operation Christmas Child. Also, Ecuadorian church leaders and other residents will help distribute more than 10,000 shoeboxes to children in schools, hospitals and homes.
Roach, a medical transcriptionist in Jeffersonville, serves as area coordinator of the Operation Christmas Child leadership team in Southeast Indiana and became involved with the project 13 years ago.
“After building shoe boxes for years with our children and community, I am thrilled to be able to witness this final stage of the shoe box journey,” said Roach. “My experience in Ecuador will enable me to share the power of a simple gift to our community that has changed the lives of thousands of children around the world.”
Some 8 million gifts were collected for Operation Christmas Child during the 2009 season, and are being delivered to children in more than 100 countries worldwide — including nearly 100,000 boxes to Ecuador. Hundreds of thousands of shoe box gifts have been delivered to the country since 1997, and more than 77 million gifts have been sent to children around the world since the project started in 1993
