CHARLESTOWN —
A jobsite foreman at the former Army Ammunition Plant in Charlestown was arrested Jan. 11 for allegedly stealing metals from the property.
Vincent Cavaliere, 47, of Lake Worth, Fla., was taken into custody following an investigation into missing copper, brass and iron. The metal was stolen Jan. 9 using a 2009 Ford truck and then sold, according to an Indiana State Police report. The stolen property was valued at $1,027. At least some of the metal — the brass and iron — was recovered by police.
According to police, Cavaliere is the jobsite foreman for Atlanta Demolition Services. He was working at the former ammunition plant when the thefts occurred.
The River Ridge Development Authority awarded Atlanta Demolition Services a $1.84 million contract to demolish two power plants at the property. The project was scheduled to begin in late October and should be finished by the end of 2012.
The metal from the towers is the property of the demolition company.
According to a previous statement by River Ridge, part of the agreement called for Atlanta Demolition to keep 335 tons of salvaged metals from the two power plants, located on the north end of the commerce center. The project is part of River Ridge’s effort to have a marketable property on the Charlestown end of the commerce center.
Cavaliere was transported to the Michael L. Becher Adult Corrections Complex to be held on $15,000 court-cash bond. He was preliminarily held on felony theft charges.
The Clark County Prosecutor’s Office has not yet filed formal charges.
