SELLERSBURG —
From the brightly colored orange and green flooring in the cafeteria/gym area to the windows strategically placed lower so children can see out of them, every aspect of the new Silver Creek Primary School has its targeted audience in mind: Children.
That’s according to the new principal, Kim Baumann.
“I really want us to become a flagship,” she said as she walked the halls of the new building recently as construction employees worked on the finishing touches of paint, moving teacher items from the elementary building to the primary school and more. “We’re going to be able to do so much. We can work on developing a love of reading and for math while not having to worry about the ISTEP and we can have [professional development] focused on that.
“We’re holding ourselves accountable for their learning.”
The primary school will house all of Silver Creek Elementary School’s preschool through first graders to alleviate that building from overcrowding. Eventually, the primary school may be expanded to include second-graders as well.
R. Mac Dyer, associate superintendent at West Clark Community Schools, said the building is expected to stay on track for the budgeted $9.11 million total. He said it’s on schedule to be completed and opened during the first week in August.
Baumann said that will be just in time for open houses prior to school starting Aug. 17. She said one of the issues she’s facing is getting the word out that there is a new school and students in grades one or lower will be going there, rather than Silver Creek Elementary School. Those living in Borden’s or Henryville’s districts will still go to those respective schools.
“It’s kind of off the road a little bit and you can’t see it,” she said of the location off Ind. 403 and Commerce Park Drive in Sellersburg. “I’m going to work to make sure the transition is as easy as possible.”
She said that since many families will have children at both the primary and elementary schools, the buildings are working together to coordinate activities, such as picture days, open houses and other events. She said school start and end times have been adjusted so that parents can go pick up a child at one school without having to worry about another waiting at the other school.
