JEFFERSONVILLE —
An 18-year-old from Jeffersonville who stopped to assist a stranded motorist is in serious condition at University Hospital in Louisville after his vehicle was struck from behind Tuesday afternoon.
Trent Waggoner, who graduated last year from Jeffersonville High School, works for a wrecker service, Indiana State Police Sgt. Jerry Goodin said. Waggoner, driving a 2010 Chevrolet pickup truck, had pulled off on the right side of the road on U.S. 31 near the Eastern Boulevard exit behind a 2000 Toyota passenger car and was helping the motorist her change a tire.
Goodin said Lindsey Leavitt, 28, of Clarksville, driving a silver 2006 Chrysler car exited Interstate 65 and left the roadway, striking the rear of Waggoner’s pickup truck. He was pinned between the two parked vehicles and suffered serious leg injuries. Goodin said the injuries were “very serious, but not life threatening.”
“We’re doing a full-scale investigation, and as always, we will forward the findings to the Clark County Prosecutor’s Office to determine what if any charges they might file,” Goodin said.
William Wilson, a recently retired government teacher at Jeffersonville High School, said he taught Waggoner and was not surprised to hear he had stopped to help.
“He was a very caring person,” Wilson said. “That sounds exactly like something he would do. That’s the kind of person he was.”
A University Hospital spokesperson said Wednesday afternoon that Waggoner was in the Intensive Care Unit in serious condition. Neither of the others involved in the wreck were listed as having serious injuries.
