> SOUTHERN INDIANA —
A 58-year-old Alabama woman was killed late Tuesday night in a vehicle crash just north of the Clark-Scott county line on Interstate 65 northbound.
A recreational vehicle, towing a sport utility vehicle, collided with the rear of a semi-tractor and trailer that was stopped on the emergency strip, according to an Indiana State Police news release.
ISP troopers, Clark and Scott County sheriff’s department deputies and Clark and Scott County emergency medical services personnel responded at 11:43 p.m., according to the release.
A preliminary investigation showed the semi had experienced engine trouble and was stopped on the right side emergency strip. The driver, Jasir Abdelkim, 33, of Chicago, had activated the vehicles flashing hazard lights and placed reflective triangles along the roadside to warn approaching traffic of its presence. The driver was waiting in the vehicle after calling for roadside assistance.
The recreational vehicle, driven by 71-year-old Timothy Gunning, of Gulf Shores, Ala., was northbound on Interstate 65 when it approached the disabled vehicle and left the roadway on the right side driving over the reflective markers and crashing into the semi tractor.
The passenger in the recreational vehicle, Rose Gunning, was pronounced dead at the scene by Scott County Coroner Kevin Collins. Timothy Gunning was transported to University Hospital in Louisville with non-life threatening injuries.
Police do not know what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.
Abdelkim was transported by ambulance to the Scott Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
I-65 northbound was closed at Exit 19 for about seven hours.
