CLARK COUNTY —
A few newcomers are already challenging incumbents in school districts after the first week of candidacy filing for November’s elections.
In Greater Clark County Schools, board president Christina Gilkey faces Dale Moss — former longtime Southern Indiana columnist for the Courier-Journal — in District 5. Gilkey has also filed for her seat.
Alice Butler, a frequent attendee of Greater Clark meetings and local certified public accountant could compete with Jerry White, board member, for his District 6 seat. White has not filed his candidacy yet, and was voted in by the board to replace Robbie Valentine after he vacated the seat.
Butler said in an email she thinks the teachers and staff do an excellent job and hopes to support them as a board member.
“I believe it is the job of the parents, the school board and the community to support our teachers and staff and help them in any way possible to achieve success for our students,” Butler said in the email. “It is the job of the administration to manage our schools, not the board’s. The board has two primary functions — to hire and evaluate the superintendent and to set policy.”
Becka Christensen, board member, has filed to keep her seventh district seat, but Ernie Gilbert has not yet filed for District 2.
In West Clark Community Schools, Joe Basham has filed for his At-large seat, but one more At-large seat remains vacant with no names filed.
In Clarksville Community Schools, the seats of Jim Bemiss, board vice president, Bill Wilson, board president and Andy Bramer, board member, are all up for grabs. Linda Wilson has filed for District 1.
