City celebrates National Night Out

Charlestown Neighborhood Block is asking residents to turn the porch lights on and come to Greenway Park to celebrate National Night Out Tuesday.

The event kicks off at 6 p.m. with food and fun for the whole family.

CLARKSVILLE

Middle school meet and greet

Clarksville Middle School, 101 E. Ettles Lane, will host a meet and greet open house for grades five through eight from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Charger Hall.

JEFFERSONVILLE

Church hosting women’s event

Wesley United Methodist Church, 1201 Locust St., Jeffersonville, will host a Women’s Day breakfast at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 14 at the church.

The speaker will be the Rev. Linda Bunton from Canaan Christian Church, Louisville. The theme will be “Women’s Unity: A Rainbow of God’s Love.”

There will be homemade breakfast casseroles, pastries, fresh fruit and juices, coffee and tea.

The Perrys to perform at church

The Perrys, one of America’s favorite Southern Gospel groups, will perform in concert at 10 a.m. Aug. 8 at Charlestown Independent Church, 9575 Ind. 62, Charlestown.

Actor planning one-man show

“The Gospel According to Mark,” adapted from the words and works of Mark Twain, will be performed by Derby Dinner Playhouse’s resident actor J. R. Stuart at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Arts & Enrichment Center, 999 Water St., Charlestown.

What began as a senior thesis project at Ball State University has blossomed into a full-length literary portrait that explores both sides of the Samuel Clemens/Twain coin. Performances benefit the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 80 at Charlestown.

General admission is $15 and $12 for seniors and students; reservations are required. Call 502-645-1886 for reservations.

Family Fun Fair at the Falls

The Falls of the Ohio Interpretive Center will host a Family Fun Fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 7 at the Center in Clarksville.

This cool indoor event offers a sample of each of the Falls of the Ohio annual events. Activities include:

• Fossil Festival, find and take home your very own 425 million-year-old fossil from a collection donated by Hanson’s Quarry.

• The Lewis & Clark Festival — meet Seaman the Dog and get his autograph.

• Earth Day, Driftwood Art, recycle natural objects into a “Nature Critter”

• George Rogers Clark Home Site, meet our re-enactors of the early 1800s and make a “Three Sisters” bracelet with corn, beans and squash.

• Archaeology Day, practice with ancient games and tools and solve a puzzle Raptor Day, watch wild birds through the telescope and take apart owl pellets Kids Corner, storytelling at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m., with fossil rubbings all day.

• Ohio River Sweep, pick up litter and receive a gift — the only outdoor activity.

• Fishing Fun Day, make a colorful fish print.

• Plus, enjoy the spectacular “400 Million Years at the Falls” movie throughout the day

The event is free with building admission of $5 for adults and $2 for children; the $2 parking fee is waived for those visiting the Interpretive Center. Call 812-280-9970 for more information.

SOUTHERN INDIANA

Hosparus needs volunteers

Hosparus–Southern Indiana needs volunteers who live in Clark, Crawford, Floyd, Harrison, Scott and Washington counties and will offer free volunteer training from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 7 at its New Albany office, 624 E. Market St., New Albany, with lunch included.

Volunteers help with administrative duties, bereavement care, patient and family care, thrift shop coverage, respite and development/fundraising. Shop volunteers work the cash register, handle inventory and greet customers.

Hosparus carefully selects volunteers and provides them with comprehensive training specially designed to meet the needs of hospice patients and families. Hosparus volunteers must have available transportation and complete training and an application process.
