NEW ALBANY —
Indiana University Southeast announced recently the creation of the Kevin Nelson Hammersmith scholarship in partnership with Duke Energy through the Duke Energy Foundation.
IUS held a luncheon Dec. 3, to introduce the scholarship and honor Hammersmith, a former Duke Energy employee and IUS Board of Advisors member who was killed in an automibile accident in November 2011.
The Duke Energy Foundation donated $25,000 to begin the fund in Hammersmith’s name. The scholarship will be awarded annually to students in the School of Natural Science who are majoring in the fields of science, technology, engineering or math.
Hammersmith wasthe former director of government and community relations at Duke. He was instrumental in shaping the Southern Indiana community through his involvement and contributions to many local organizations.
He was a member of the IUS Board of Advisors for six years, and he showed unwavering support for education and the mission of the university, according to a release from IUS.
