Salvation Army giving away clothes
As students prepare to go back to school, The Salvation Army will be hosting a clothes giveaway for residents of Clark, Floyd, Scott and Washington counties from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today, Aug. 1, and Thursday, Aug. 2, at its thrift store, 528 Little League Blvd., Clarksville. Crawford and Harrison County residents are to go to the Corydon Thrift Store.
This is the 22nd year of the event which is designed to help parents overcome the high cost of sending children back to school. Any child or adult residing in Clark, Floyd, Scott and Washington counties are eligible to receive up to eight articles of clothing for free. Participants need to bring verification of school enrollment, or birth certificate, and proof of address.
JEFFERSONVILLE
K of C bingo holding grand reopening
Knights of Columbus No. 1348 Bingo, 225 E. Market St. Jeffersonville, will be having a grand reopening at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, and 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5.
Players will receive a free dauber, hot dog and drink. Prices are an all in one pack — 12 Face —$10 or 18 Face — $15.
Women’s health series continues
Clark Memorial Hospital continues its 2012 Women’s Health Series with “Mirror, Mirror: Promoting Healthy Images for Children” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, in the Kathryn Raines Education and Conference Center in the main hospital building, 1220 Missouri Ave., Jeffersonville.
Dr. Carrie Crigger, pediatrician with Jeffersonville Pediatrics, will discuss healthy and positive ways to shape the self-image of the children in your life.
The Women’s Series will continue through the rest of the year with presentations including:
• Keeping Bones Strong: Osteoporosis, Oct. 9
• Women and Diabetes, Dec. 4

Ivy Tech holding open house
Ivy Tech will host an open registration event Aug. 14. Students may register for the fall semester and get on-the-spot information about transferring past college credit.
Two sessions will be held — 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or 4 to 6:30 p.m. The registration will be held at Ivy Tech Community College, 8204 Ind. 311, Sellersburg, in Pfau Hall, Room B20.
Academic advisers will be on hand to help students register for the fall 2012 semester, which begins Aug. 20. Students will have the opportunity to meet with financial aid professionals and see Ivy Tech’s expanded campus. Students with previous college experience can learn how to transfer credits to Ivy Tech. Students should bring a transcript or other information about the classes completed for on-the-spot evaluation of prior college credit.

Tea Party to meet
The Clark County Tea Party invites the public to the group’s next meeting from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, at Silver Creek Middle School, 495 N. Indiana Ave., Sellersburg.

St. John’s hosting rummage sale
St. John’s Presbyterian Church, 13th and Elm streets in New Albany, will sponsor an indoor rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, and Saturday, Aug. 4, in the church gymnasium.
GEORGETOWN
Church hosting chicken dinner
Tunnel Hill Christian Church, 5105 Old Georgetown Road, Georgetown, will sponsor a barbecue chicken dinner, dine-in family style or take out from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, at the church. Adult dinners are $8, children 6 to 10, $4 and 5 and under are free.
The day will feature great music, games for the kids and shopping for kids of all ages. There will be a Cane Ridge worship service outside in the shelter house starting at 10 a.m.
GPD observing National Night Out
Georgetown Police Department will be celebrating the 29th annual National Night Out from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 7 .
National Night Out is a year-long community building campaign that is designed to: heighten crime prevention awareness; generate support and participation in local anticrime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
Along with the traditional request to have the community involve themselves in outside lights and front porch vigils, the department will be co-sponsoring a block party to be held at the Georgetown Optimist Club, 8260 Ind. 64 with the assistance from the Optimist Club, Georgetown Township Fire Department, Yellow Ambulance of Southern Indiana and many others including local merchants. There will be crime-prevention information given out, food and drinks provided, activities for the children, plus many more fun activities available for those who attend. It is free.
