JEFFERSONVILLE —
In addition to the memorial service, Jeffersonville leaders congratulated four winners of the King Scholarship on Monday.
The $500 annual scholarship awards community service by students from around Clark County. Janice Leavell, who heads the King Holiday Committee, said the purpose of the scholarship is to encourage scholastic achievement, volunteerism and compassion “especially now in this divisive society.”
“This one puts an emphasis on the students engaged in volunteerism,” said Margaret Shea, a committee member.
Austin Traylor, an 18-year-old senior from Silver Creek High School, had some of the most unique volunteer work on his application. He was a member of the Zussman Role Players, a group that helps soldiers train at the Zussman Urban Warfare facility at Fort Knox.
“I had a blast with that,” he said.
Of course, Traylor had some more conventional volunteer work, as well, such as an Eagle Scout project and domestic mission trips. He’s heading to Texas A & M next year.
About two dozen students applied for the scholarships.
“We did have quite a task trying to pick these winners,” Leavell said. “Hopefully they come back to Clark County. We need them here.”
