Exhibit opens Saturday
The Carnegie Center for Art and History, 201 E. Spring St., New Albany, will host the grand opening of a new permanent exhibit, “Remembered: The Life of Lucy Higgs Nichols,” at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4.
Lucy Higgs Nichols is brought to life in this new exhibit, which details her escape from slavery in 1862, and her service as a nurse with the 23rd Indiana Regiment during the Civil War, to her life in freedom in New Albany as an admired citizen whose wartime service earned her a nurse’s pension by a Special Act of Congress in 1898. The exhibit is an extension of the Carnegie Center’s award-winning permanent exhibit, Ordinary People, Extraordinary Courage: Men and Women of the Underground Railroad.
Sponsored by the Carnegie Center Inc., this event is free and the public is invited to attend.
Arts classes on tap
Beginning Thursday, Feb. 9, Oil Painting techniques will be taught by Georgetown artist Wini Kemple Harrison. For the schedule and additional information, call the Arts Council at 812-949-4238.
Also, the following classes will be held at the YMCA, Floyd County Branch, at 33 State St., New Albany.
• Feb. 11 (2-6 p.m.) — Greeting cards/Valentine workshop taught by master calligraphy artist Jan Hurst. Basic greeting card design. Cost for the two-day class: $60.
• Feb. 16 and 17 (noon-4 p.m.) — Accordion Books Workshop taught by master calligraphy artist Jan Hurst. Paint beautiful papers and make small books. Cost for the two-day class: $60
• Feb. 21 (noon-4 p.m.) Introduction to Calligraphy. Learn basic letter forms. Taught by master calligraphy artist, Jan Hurst. Cost is $40.
• Feb. 21 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) Flower Arranging. Presented by master florist, Carolyn Minutillo from Lavender Hill Florist. Cost: $50.
• March 1 and 2 (noon-4 p.m.) Paper Batik Workshop. Create decorative papers perfect for greeting cards, or accordion books. Taught by master calligraphy artist, Jan Hurst. Cost for the two day class: $60.

Thrift shop set to open
Sophie’s Hope Thrift Shoppe grand opening will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, at the new location, 3808 E. 10th St., Jeffersonville.
After the grand opening regular thrift store hours will be Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Proceeds benefit the Southern Indiana Animal Rescue.

CLARK COUNTY
Election board to meet Monday
The Clark County Election Board will meet at 4 p.m., Monday, Feb. 6 at 501 E. Court Ave., Room 131, Jeffersonville.
The purpose of this meeting is to elect a chairperson, discuss plans for the election in 2012 and any and all other business.
Livestock enrollment set
Clark County 4-H youth planning to exhibit beef or dairy steers at the 2012 Clark County 4-H Fair must have their animal(s) enrolled and RFID tagged Feb. 4. The identification will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at the fairgrounds, 9806 Ind. 62, Charlestown. Commercial heifers and cows can also be brought to this February enrollment date.
Four-H’ers must be in the possession of the animal(s) and be feeding and keeping records of their project from Feb. 4 to the Clark County 4-H Fair. If the animal(s) are not enrolled by the deadline date, the animal(s) will not be eligible to be shown at the 2012 Clark County 4-H Fair. All animals must be owned or owned in partnership by the 4-H member. First year 4-H members must join a local 4-H club and turn in a 2012 Clark County 4-H member enrollment form to the Clark County Extension Office prior to this Feb. 4 ID day to be eligible.
