Clark county briefs for July 31, 2010

CLARK COUNTY — JEFFERSONVILLE

Library program on St. James Court

The Jeffersonville Township Public Library will present Dr. Tom Owen for a program on St. James Court & Environs, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 19 at 211 E. Court Ave., Jeffersonville.

Owen, an historian and politician in Louisville, brings a Victorian neighborhood to life. Owen is the Metro Council president and councilman for District 8 and previously served on the Board of Alderman from 1990 to 1998.

A full professor at the University of Louisville, he holds a Ph.D. in American History from the University of Kentucky. Known as the Pied Piper of Louisville, Owen hosts walking tours in Louisville that are lively, funny, poignant and informative.

During his presentation, he will explore the homes, statues, fountains and gardens of St. James Court, Belgravia and Central Park. Considered the crown jewels of Old Louisville, the courts were the site of the Southern Exposition from 1883-1887, held each year for 100 days.

A five-year series of World’s Fairs, it was essentially an industrial and mercantile show. Situated on 45 acres of what is now the St. James-Belgravia Historic District, the exposition was larger than any previous American exhibition with the exception of the Centennial Exposition held in Philadelphia in 1876.

The event is free to the public. Call the library at 812-285-5630 for more information.
