JEFFERSONVILLE —
Emergency Management Coordinator Mindy Christian will be leaving her Jeffersonville post for a similar job in Louisville next month.
Christian will start as emergency services coordinator for Metro Louisville’s Emergency Management Agency on March 1.
She applied for the job in December, a few weeks after Mayor Mike Moore was elected. She decided to do so after initially hearing that Moore would be eliminating her position. He ended up keeping Christian, but Louisville came calling anyway.
She said she was looking forward to the new position, noting that she’d be working as a part of a team of coordinators, rather than being the lone coordinator as she is in Jeffersonville.
Christian’s position was created as a part-time role by former Mayor Rob Waiz in 2005, when the city was dealing with evacuees from Hurricane Katrina. Mayor Tom Galligan made it a full-time position during his term.
“Mindy’s done a lot of great work for the city of Jeffersonville,” Moore said. “I hate to see her leave. [She’s] earned that position in Louisville.”
For now, Moore said he doesn’t plan to fill the position once she leaves.
“I believe we can utilize some of the staff we have in place already,” he said.
A newly hired grant writer will be doing some of the organization work that Christian previously tended to. Further, the city’s police and fire departments as well as the city safety director will be handling her tasks during emergencies.
