JEFFERSONVILLE —
Many churches will celebrate World Communion Sunday but only the downtown Churches of Jeffersonville do it together. Established in 1936, when the world was deeply fragmented by conflict, World Communion Sunday has been an observance to help Christians all over the world affirm their unity.
In Jeffersonville on Sunday, four downtown congregations will come together at 11:15 a.m. in the parking lot of Wall Street United Methodist Church, 240 Wall St. Members of St. Paul’s Episcopal, Wall Street United Methodist, First Presbyterian and St. Luke’s United Church of Christ will gather together to share communion.
Each church brings their familiar communion elements. They share anthems, prayers and hymns. A blessing will be said over the bread and the cups and then participants choose to receive communion from any one of the participating pastors. Final hymns and prayers of thanks are offered and many stay and converse with brothers and sisters from neighboring congregations.
The downtown churches invite other area congregations and other brothers and sisters to gather with them Sunday to celebrate unity in God.
At 5 p.m. Sunday, these churches gather again for another annual service, the Blessing of Pets — this one held at First Presbyterian Church, 222 Walnut St. The service gives thanks for the companionship of our pets — and reminds participants of the blessing we have in all of creation.
Those not able to bring their pet may choose to bring a picture, and some children even bring a stuffed animal companion to be blessed. All are welcome and invited to come and participate.
