CLARK COUNTY —
Shirley Ree Woehrle, 79, of Jeffersonville, died Tuesday at Clark Memorial Hospital.
Woehrle, along with her husband John, is known throughout the community for philanthropic efforts, which include helping to found the Clark County Soccer Association, the George Rogers Clark Little League and two Jeffersonville High School scholarships.
The couple formerly owned the Lakewood Drive-In, Dairy Glade Ice Cream Store and were co-owners of Jerry’s Restaurant, along with the parents of current owner and Clark County Commissioner Mike Moore.
Moore said he had many fond memories of taking family outings to the Woehrle’s as a child and that they were always an event.
“I’ve always kind of considered John and Shirley another set of parents,” he said. “[She] and John did everything together.”
The couple has meant a great deal to the community helping to build concession stands and restrooms at the Clark County soccer fields as well as providing support to maintain the Little League field that bears their name. Moore added that John recently committed to extend the naming rights to the fields for another three years. In 2008, the couple gave $30,000 to the Little League.
“They’ve been a couple that have always answered the call for the community,” Moore said.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Scott Funeral Home’s North Chapel in Jeffersonville. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
