CLARK COUNTY —
A New Washington man was killed Wednesday morning in a vehicle collision near his home, Clark County Sheriff’s Department Maj. Chuck Adams said.
Jack C. Johnson, 28, of the 4000 block of Goss Road, was driving a 1996 Ford Escort that was struck by a 1999 Dodge Ram 3500 pickup truck. The first call to police came at 7:05 a.m., and an off-duty officer arrived on scene at 7:11 a.m.
The driver of the pickup truck, Craig R. O’Leary, 24, of Charlestown, was driving southbound on New Washington-Bethlehem Road.
O’Leary told police he observed the vehicle driven by Johnson headed westbound on Goss Road but thought he would stop. According to police, Johnson failed to stop at a stop sign and attempted to turn left onto New Washington-Bethlehem Road where the vehicle was struck on the driver’s side.
Johnson, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected. Police do not yet know whether speed was a factor. Alcohol was not believed to be involved, but O’Leary was taken to Saint Catherine Regional Hospital for a routine toxicology blood draw. He was not injured.
Adams said O’Leary had stopped at a store and was headed to work. Johnson also appeared to be going to work.
Johnson’s house was destroyed by a fire about a year ago, and his family lost nearly everything they owned. He is married with young children, according to police.
