Henryville High School Hornets’ Nest named finalist for state scholastic journalism award

HENRYVILLE — The 2011 edition of the Henryville High School Hornets’ Nest yearbook has been named a finalist for the Indiana High School Press Association Hoosier Star Award in Division I (small schools).

IHSPA sponsors the critique service for its member publications, and publications rated as “excellent” or “superior” become finalists for the Hoosier Star Award, the state’s highest honor for high school journalism.

Yearbooks are critiqued in areas such as theme development, coverage, writing and editing, design, and photography and can earn one of five overall ratings, ranging from “needs improvement” to “superior.” The Hornets’ Nest earned an overall “excellent” rating, with a “superior” rating for photography. Nationally-known scholastic journalism judge Dan Niles said, “The Hornets’ Nest was a pleasure to read, especially for all the solid reporting and good quality of photos.”

Hoosier Star award winners and honorable mention recipients will be announced at next fall’s IHSPA state convention.

“It is significant that [HHS] already is considered by a national judge to be among the state’s best,” Diana Hadley, IHSPA executive director, said.

Editor of the 2011 Hornets’ Nest was Caitlin Soard, with assistance from team leaders Sydney Hollingsworth, Brandon Crotchett and Kathy O’Lone. All four of these students are also currently leaders working on the 2012 edition of the Hornets’ Nest. Adviser is Jolie Lindley. The Hornets’ Nest is produced entirely by the student publications class at HHS.
