CLASS 3A: Scorching-hot Dragons blaze into final

MARENGO — Silver Creek scorched the Crawford County High School nets last night and knocked off the host Wolfpack 76-71 to advance to tonight’s class 3A sectional championship.

The Dragons shot 65 percent overall and Spencer Robinson led all scorers with 25 points as the Dragons defeated Crawford for the second time this season.

“I told them before the game that this was going to be a war,” Dragons head coach John Bradley said. “We went to battle tonight. I’m so proud of my kids for answering the challenge.”

Robinson was Mister Consistent for his team, scoring in every quarter and getting to the rim seemingly whenever he wanted.

“Spencer has had two really good sectional games. He took the openings tonight when he had them,” Bradley said. “He took a few wild ones in the first quarter but once we got ahold of him he did a super job. He took the ball to the hole.”

It was back and forth early and Creek found themselves behind 18-16 at the end of the first period. Trailing 22-20 early in the second frame, the Dragons ripped off a 15-0 run fueled by three straight Cody Jackson triples to grab control of the game.

Creek led 39-31 at intermission after hitting 9 of 14 second period shots, including 3 of 5 threes.

“Cody (Jackson) did that the other night versus Charlestown,” Bradley said of Jackson’s three trifectas in the second quarter. “I had been starting him but he’d been sick with the flu so we went another route. We get instant offense out of our first sub and two nights in a row he has definitely been instant offense.”

The Dragons had just four first half turnovers and held Crawford to 39 percent shooting over the first 16 minutes.

“We shot well. I thought our defense tonight was very good. We have 25 assists and Michael (Bradley) had 13. We did a really good job of breaking their defense down and our kids finished,” Bradley said.

The Wolfpack started the third quarter with a 10-2 run, closing with 42-41 with 5:37 left in the third. However a Michael Bradley three stopped the Crawford run and started a Creek spurt that would push the lead to 50-41 with 3:47 left in the period.

The Dragons hit an amazing 9-of-10 third-quarter field goals and led by 10 entering the final stanza.

“We talked at half about continuing to play to win. Sometimes these guys get a lead and they get too careful. We wanted to continue to attack down to the last minute,” Bradley said.

Creek maintained its 10-point fourth quarter lead as late as 2:49 after a McCall layup from Bradley pushed the lead to 72-62. The sectional hosts made one final run, an 8-0 spurt that got them with 72-70 with 0:37 remaining, but the Dragons would not relinquish the lead and advanced to tonight’s title contest against Salem, a 69-64 overtime winner over Corydon in the sectional opener.

“Throughout the course of the game each one of my kids that played stepped up and made a special play one way or another,” Bradley said. “Other than missing a few free throws we played very, very well.”

The Dragons were outrebounded 36-27 and were only 6-of-15 from the foul line, but shot 72 percent in the second half to win back to back games for the first time since December 29.
