Oldham will not coach Jeffersonville football Friday

Jeff football coach suspended one game for playing ineligible players in scrimmage

JEFFERSONVILLE — Jeffersonville High School football coach Lonnie Oldham will not be on the sidelines for the Red Devils’ season opener tonight against Louisville Eastern at Blair Field.

Greater Clark County Schools announced on Thursday that Oldham will serve a one-game suspension after playing three Jeff varsity football players who were academically ineligible in last Friday’s preseason scrimmage against Clarksville.

Jeff athletic director Lisa Stemler said via email that her department immediately reported the incident to the IHSAA once it learned of the ineligible players.

Stemler further stated that IHSAA commissioner Bobby Cox has issued a warning to the Jeff football program and that the ineligible players will not play until they meet the minimum standards for academic eligibility.

Jeff assistant coach Alfonzo Browning will serve as the Red Devils’ interim coach for tonight’s game.

Oldham became the Red Devils’ coach last season after spending one year as Jeff’s defensive coordinator under his predecessor, Bob Redman. Oldham guided the Devils to a 5-5 record in 2011 after they posted a 1-9 mark in 2010.

Oldham is about to enter his 10th season as a head football coach, as he has a career record of 43-56. Prior to coming to Jeff, he coached at Louisville Seneca, Western Hills in Cincinnati and his alma mater, Oldham County (Ky.). He is a former winner of the Kentucky Football Coaches Association Class 4A Coach of the Year award.

Oldham was recently named the coach of the Jeff High baseball team. He served as the interim coach late last season after the sudden resignation of Jeff baseball coach Matthew Rigsby.

A message left on Oldham’s cell phone was not returned as of press time.
