• Charlestown

Coat giveaway seeks donations

The North Clark Outreach Center and the Kiwanis Club of Charlestown are collecting winter clothing items with donations accepted between now and Oct. 9 to distribute at a coat giveaway in late October.

New and gently used coats, hats and gloves can be dropped off at drop locations throughout Charlestown, including: Charlestown High School; Charlestown Middle School; Jonathan Jennings Elementary School; Pleasant Ridge Elementary School; D.A. Inc.; Edward Jones Investments; First Savings Bank; New Washington State Bank; City Hall; and The North Clark Outreach Center.

The coat giveaway will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Charlestown Arts and Enrichment Center, 999 Water St. Last year, more than 200 coats were distributed to Charlestown residents.

Business hosting ribbon-cutting

One Southern Indiana will hold a ribbon-cutting at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at CG’s Clothing & Gifts, 1150 E. Lewis and Clark Parkway, Clarksville.

Owned by Cathy Glotzbach Kruer, CG’s is designed to fill a value-priced clothing void left by the closing of Fashion Shop and Value City.

Kruer has 35 years of fashion retail experience as prior partner in the Shoe Sensation chain, as well as vice president of Underground Attitude, a junior clothing retailer.

CG’s supports local charities as well. Through the end of the year, 10 percent of CG’s profits will support the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville.

Library hosts October Story Hour

The Clarksville branch of the Jeffersonville Township Public Library will host an October Story Hour for ages 4 and younger at 10:30 a.m. and at 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays Oct. 6-27, at the library, 1312 Eastern Blvd., Clarksville.

Stories, songs, crafts and library fun will fill the 45-minute session.

The following blood drives are scheduled in Clark County:

• OCT. 8 — 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., Sellersburg Healthcare Rehabilitation Center, 7823 Old Ind. 60, Sellersburg.

• OCT. 9 — 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wedgewood Healthcare Center, 101 Potters Lane, Clarksville.

• OCT. 13 — 2 to 7 p.m., St. Anthony Catholic Church, 316 N. Sherwood Ave., Clarksville.

• OCT. 13 — 3 to 7 p.m., Wal-Mart, 1351 Veterans Parkway, Clarksville.

• OCT. 14 — 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Clark Memorial Hospital, 1220 Missouri Ave., Jeffersonville.

Fall Festival at IU Southeast

Indiana University Southeast will host its annual Fall Festival from 4 to 8 p.m. Oct. 4, the kick-off to Harvest Homecoming, and features fun for the whole family.

The fun begins at 4 p.m. when the midway and food court open. This year’s midway features inflatable slides and jumpers, games and a rock-climbing wall.

Various performers including the Red Edition Dance Team, and other student groups will take the stage every 30 minutes, plus there’s face painting, pumpkin painting, and appearances by a stilt walker, fire eater and clowns.

Hot dogs, barbecue, corn on the cob, cotton candy, nachos, sodas and more are available all afternoon. At 5 p.m., the Harvest Homecoming Hot Air Balloon Launch takes place.

Tickets for food and games will be on sale for 50 cents. Most games and food require one or two tickets. Visit ius.edu for more information.

Providence hosts The Marlins at event

The Marlins will share their music and heartfelt stories as alumni and special guests of Our Lady of Providence Jr.-Sr. High School during its Annual Student Assistance Program, or ASAP, event, beginning with a special reception for the Class of 1960, at 6 p.m. Oct. 7, at Huber’s Orchard, Winery & Vineyards’ Heritage Hall, Starlight.

The ASAP reception will be at 6:30 p.m., and dinner and program will be at 7 p.m. ASAP raises funds to provide tuition assistance to families of students who need help in providing their children with a Catholic education at Providence.

There is no charge to attend the event, but donations are accepted. Other speakers include economics teacher and alumnus Steve Beyl (’99) and a current student.

Scenic views from five Indiana locations are online through Nov. 13 at VisitIndiana.com as part of the annual Leaf Cam promotion from the Indiana Office of Tourism Development.

Visitors can click on a special Leaf Cam section of VisitIndiana.com to watch current images of the leaves at each location.

The five Leaf Cam locations for 2009 are: The Fort Golf Course at Fort Harrison State Park in Indianapolis; French Lick Resort in French Lick; Corydon Capitol State Historic Site in Corydon; Hilltop Cabins in Brown County; and Spring Mill State Park in Mitchell.
