A not-guilty plea was entered Tuesday on behalf of Brandon Nevils — a 25-year-old Sellersburg man accused of molesting girls being babysat at his mother’s home — in Clark Superior Court No. 1.
He was charged with four counts of class A felony child molestation and 19 counts of class B felony child molestation. The charges stem from both sexual intercourse and deviate sexual conduct. At least some of the alleged molestations appeared to have taken place while Nevils, himself, was a minor.
The incidents took place between 1998 and 2006, when Nevils was between the ages of 14 and 22, a probable-cause affidavit says. His alleged victims may have been as young as 4 years old. There were at least four victims.
His mother babysat the children at her home on the 200 block of Indianola Street. The affidavit says that Nevils would wake the young girls up in the morning or during their afternoon nap and take them into the bathroom or his bedroom, where he would touch their “private areas” both over and underneath their underwear. He also reportedly rubbed up against girls on other occasions, including when one girl pretended to be asleep.
In other incidents, he allegedly used a cell phone to take naked pictures of at least one of the victims.
The Sellersburg Police Department interviewed Nevils prior to the charges being filed. He told police then that he’d never been alone with the kids his mother babysat and “would never hurt a child.”
A pretrial conference was set for 9 a.m. Dec. 21 and a trial was scheduled for March 16.
Nevils posted $50,000 cash surety bond, or $5,000 cash, when his case was transferred from juvenile court. He was ordered to have no contact with anyone under the age of 18.
A class A felony conviction carries with it a sentence of 20 to 50 years in jail; a class B felony conviction comes with a six to 20 years sentence.
