Kids can decorate desserts Saturday
Adrienne & Co. Bakery and Cafe will offer an event where children 18 or younger can learn to decorate cookies and cupcakes with a Thanksgiving/turkey theme.
Children can keep what they decorate to take home, and will learn from Myra Martino, master cake decorator.

First Baptist seeks holiday donations
First Baptist Church in Henryville will serve as a collection point for Operation Christmas Child, the world’s largest Christmas project, with collections being taken starting Monday through Nov. 23 at the church, 110 S. Franke Road, Henryville.
Through Operation Christmas Child, residents can pack shoebox gifts for children in more than 100 countries suffering from natural disaster, war, terrorism, disease, famine and poverty. Operation Christmas Child uses tracking technology that allows donors to “follow your box” to the destination country, where it will be hand-delivered to a child in need.
To register shoebox gifts and find out what country they are delivered to, use the EZ Give donation form found at samaritanspurse.org. Collection site hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Nov. 16 and 17, and 19 and 20; 3 to 6 p.m. Nov. 18; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 21; 12:30 to 6 p.m. Nov. 22; and 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 23.

School sets dates for talks
New Washington Middle/High School will host its parent-teacher conferences from 3:15 to 6:45 p.m. Thursday.
Carla Hobson will also host a New Washington and Beyond workshop from 6 to 7:30 p.m. that day for parents and students in grades 9 to 12.
The workshop will focus on preparing for life after high school with information about college and careers.

IUS honors vets with two days of events
The newly reformed Indiana University Southeast Student Veterans Organization and several IUS musical, theater and art groups will honor our nation’s veterans this week.
This will begin with a bell-ringing ceremony at 11 a.m. Wednesday in McCullough Plaza, duplicating the 11 rings at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month signifying Armistice Day, which was later renamed Veterans Day.
The following events also are open to the public:
• The Chancellor’s Veterans Luncheon — 11:45 a.m. Wednesday in the Hoosier Room. The lunch is free for student, faculty and staff veterans and invited guests. Speakers include Brig. Gen. Arnold Gordon-Bray, Fort Knox Deputy Commanding General, and Stacie Hitts, of Operation Diploma.
• Celebrate America: Veterans Day Concert — 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Stem Concert Hall in the Paul W. Ogle Cultural and Community Center. IUS professor and concert pianist Joanna Goldstein and The Commonwealth Brass Band will perform.
• Care Package Collection — Through Friday. The Adult Student Center is collecting donations to send care packages to school children and deployed soldiers in Afghanistan. Recommended items for soldiers include: cards, board games, books, magazines, Frisbees, footballs and other lightweight recreational items. For school children, recommended donations include pens, pencils, writing/drawing paper and chalk.
• “Living as a Patriot” — 2 p.m. Saturday in the Stem Concert Hall at the Ogle Center. The program includes music from the Commonwealth Brass Band and the IUS Concert Choir. Students from the IUS Communication Department will showcase reader’s theater presentations, and students from the fine arts program will display computer graphics. The program is free and open to the public.

Restaurants offering vets free meals
Applebee’s will offer free meals to veterans and active military showing military ID, photo or uniform all day Wednesday, and Golden Corral will offer a free meal to veterans and active military on the honor system from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday.
To qualify for the free Applebee’s meal, participants must present one of the following: a U.S. Uniform Services Identification Card; U.S. Uniform Services Retired Identification Card; Current Leave and Earnings Statement; Veterans organization card (American Legion and VFW); photograph in uniform; DD214; citation or commendation; or be in uniform.
Golden Corral’s ninth-annual military appreciation is offered with no proof required, other than the person’s word that he or she is a veteran.

Appeals court hears Covered Bridge case
The Indiana Court of Appeals heard the respective oral arguments on the town of Sellersburg’s effort to annex the Covered Bridge Subdivision and the Willows on Wednesday. Covered Bridge appealed the trial court’s ruling that the town’s annexation preceded the subdivision’s effort to incorporate into an independent town and that, in exchange for sewer service, the residents would agree to not remonstrate against the annexation attempt.
