Sidewalks not coming to Jonquil Drive

Councilwoman says it would have cost $70,000

By DAVID A. MANN

A plan to install sidewalks on Jeffersonville’s Jonquil Drive has been canceled for now, according to Jeffersonville City Councilwoman Barbara Wilson.

The majority of people on the street were against the project, so the city has called it off, Wilson said.

Residents who were against the project attended a city council meeting recently to voice their opposition.

One resident noted that the walks would make yards smaller and uproot trees. Another woman who spoke against it said sidewalks would encourage nearby apartment dwellers — who frequently walk down the street — to peek into homeowners’ windows. They presented a petition, asking the city to stop the project.

Wilson, who represents the district in which Jonquil Drive is located, said the project would have cost the city $70,000.

It’s unclear which street would next get sidewalks as a result of the change of plans.
