Donations wanted for holiday season

The North Clark Outreach Center is looking for donors to help give local needy children a happy holiday.

Charlestown’s Elf Tree provides gifts for children — from newborns to 18-year-olds — whose parents or guardians may otherwise not be able to afford gifts. The donors can choose an “elf” from the tree and then go shopping wherever they choose. Participants are provided a list of the child’s needs and wants, including sizes. Typical costs for each “elf” are between $100 to $125.

If someone wishes to donate, but cannot do the shopping themselves, the outreach center will accept monetary donations and then go shopping for the items on the list.

The center is requesting that all items purchased be returned to the outreach center by Dec. 11. About 140 to 150 “elves” are available to be chosen at New Washington Bank or the JayC Food Store in Charlestown.

Contact North Clark Outreach Center Director Ruthie Jackson at 502-773-7474 for more information.

Charity hosting card drive

Almost 1,000 Southern Indiana and Kentucky adults and children surviving intimate partner abuse and sexual violence will rely on The Center for Women and Families’ Holiday Gift Card Drive as the sole means of providing gifts for loved ones this holiday season and individuals, businesses and community groups are urged to purchase and deliver gift cards in increments of $25 in lieu of bringing gifts to the shelter.

Gift cards allow residents living in emergency shelter to safely shop online for their holiday gifts and nonresidential support groups to shop together on designated shopping days.

The center prefers gift cards from the following locations: Kmart, Target, Wal-Mart, Meijer, J.C. Penney, Kohl’s, Jefferson Mall and Green Tree Mall.

Gift cards can be dropped off at the Southern Indiana campus on Charlestown Road in New Albany from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday — call 812-944-6743 for directions — or mailed to The Center for Women and Families, ATTN: Janet, P.O. Box 2048, Louisville, Ky., 40201-2048 and include your name and mailing address with the cards.
