TARC hearings are this week
Transit Authority of River City’s service will be cut back on many routes in February because of a budget shortfall caused by the recession. Because of high unemployment, it is projected that about $2 million less in local funding will be available for service during this fiscal year than expected.
TARC’s proposed service reductions are aimed at minimizing impacts by cutting routes with limited ridership or those that are duplicated by another route, a press release from TARC says. It has attempted to preserve service in all geographic areas and will continue to serve the majority of the community’s businesses, schools and activity centers, the release says.
Ten routes are proposed for elimination and 22 routes will see service reductions. The express routes proposed for elimination will continue to be served in most cases by nonexpress service. Most of the other routes slated for elimination have alternate service available
TARC will be soliciting input on the proposed changes, which will go into effect Feb. 21. Customers interested in responding can send an e-mail to info@ridetarc.org or call 502-561-5112. Those wishing to make their comments in person can attend one of the following hearings:
• 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. today, TARC Union Station, 1000 W. Broadway, Louisville
• 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, New Albany-Floyd County Public Library, 180 W. Spring St., New Albany.
