CLARK COUNTY —
A Clark County Sheriff’s Department deputy and another man are recovering after a vehicle crash early Friday morning.
Deputy Shane Abbott, a three-year department veteran, was driving his police car when he crashed into a pickup truck that apparently cut him off just before 5:30 a.m., according to police.
“Our guy was on State Road 60 on his way to a 911 call in Borden, and this guy pulled out from St. Joe Road East into the path of our officer traveling [westbound],” Clark County Sheriff Danny Rodden said.
Rodden said the male driver of the truck stopped in front of the officer.
“He got freaked out or something when the saw the car coming,” Rodden said. “[Abbott] tried to swerve and miss him, but he caught the corner of the vehicle.”
Both men were transported by ambulance to University Hospital in Louisville. Rodden said both appear to be doing well.
Abbott had some pain in his lower legs and was undergoing tests, but he was talking and appeared fine, Rodden said.
He said Abbott did not have his lights and sirens activated. He was responding to a standard 911 hang-up call, so those would not have been necessary, police say. It was not immediately clear how fast he was driving.
Indiana State Police is handling the investigation. The initial report only listed the last name of the other driver involved in the wreck.
