Scholarship deadline extended

The deadline for the Virginia Walker Memorial Scholarship Fund has been extended to Thursday, Feb. 28. Each year, Regional Youth Services awards scholarships to foster children who were with the agency at any point since its founding in 1973. The applicants will be selected based on several criteria including an interview, letters of recommendation, financial need, academic record, and extracurricular and community activities. Past scholarship winners may reapply.

Scholarships are a minimum of $500 and up to a maximum of $5,000. The RYS Board of Directors determines the amount and number of scholarships awarded each year, which may be used only for tuition, fees, books, and room/board. CASI opens Section 8 list

Community Action of Southern Indiana will open the waiting list for Section 8 Housing Choice voucher (HCV) Program in Clark, Floyd and Harrison counties to the first 100 applicants to apply.

Applications will be taken from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, at Community Action of Southern Indiana, 1613 East Eighth St., Jeffersonville. Only 100 applications will be taken.

Persons needing reasonable accommodations for disability should call Community Action of Southern Indiana at 812-288-6451 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Feb. 26 or Feb. 27.

Applicants must be prepared to provide a photo ID, Social Security cards, and birth certificates for all household members. Preference is given to applicants who at the time of application provide proof of Indiana residency, are currently homeless, are working or enrolled in an educational or training program, are age 62 or older, are disabled or have a disabled family member.

Group to discuss ‘The Color of Water’

The New Albany-Floyd County Public Library for a special book discussion for Black History Month at noon Monday, Feb. 25. The book to be discussed in the library’s Strassweg Auditorium will be James McBride’s critically acclaimed “The Color of Water: A Black Man’s Tribute to his White Mother.”

Healing Hearts Banquet set

The third-annual Healing Hearts Banquet will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 1 at First Assembly of God Church, 2878 Charlestown Road, New Albany.

S.O.A.R., Survivors of Abuse Restored, a nonprofit based in New Albany, has been helping women recover for more than 13 years.

Food is just the start of this white tablecloth event. Artists in several medium will be creating during the event, with the completed art auctioned during the evening, along with numerous gift baskets. This event will also be a night of educating the community about childhood sexual abuse with a speaker who shares her story of healing and hope.

Tickets are $40 per person and must be purchased in advance.

Bridal show coming Sunday

Southern Indiana’s eighth-annual premiere bridal show will be from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, at the Calumet Club, 1614 E. Spring St., New Albany.

Admission is free for the bride and groom. Guest admission is $5 per person. More than 30 different vendors providing wedding services will be in attendance.

Retired federal employees to meet

The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, Chapter 1777 of New Albany will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, at Tucker’s Family Restaurant, 2141 State St., New Albany.

The program will feature Patrick More, district director for Duke Energy. The lunch is ordered individually from the menu and no reservations are necessary.

All active and retired federal employees and their guests are invited to attend. NARFE is an organization dedicated to helping preserve and sustain federal earnings and benefits. Church hosting guest speaker

Hamburg Church of Christ, 8921 Newberry Road, Sellersburg, is sponsoring a program featuring Bryson Childs from Paragould, Ark., from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, at the church. He will be speaking about L.I.F.E. Missions, using the Home to Change the World. He will explain in detail how each of us can use what we have to bring others to a saving knowledge of our savior.

LOUISVILLE

Kids show coming next weekend

The Louisville Kids Fair will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 2 and March 3 at the Kentucky International Convention Center. Admission at the gate is $10 for adults and $8 for children. The show focuses on entertainment and education for families. A portion of all ticket sales benefit the WHAS Crusade for Children.

Activities include: inflatables, petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, safety education areas, hands on activities, miniature golf, stage entertainment, Caillou and Strawberry Shortcake meet and greets, a reptile exhibit, carnival games and so much more. Sunday is Grandparents Day, with grandparents getting in free with a paid child admission.
