CLARKSVILLE —
The name of the second suspect in the early Sunday morning shooting outside Jersey’s Cafe on Lynch Lane in Clarksville has been released by police.
Clarksville police report that Christopher L. Smith, 33, of 1508 Francis Drive in Jeffersonville, was with Aaron Overton, 20, of Jeffersonville, during the shooting about 2 a.m. in the parking lot of the bar. The incident sent David Ryan McNeary, 31, of New Albany, to University of Louisville Hospital for three gunshot wounds in his leg.
Police said Monday afternoon that McNeary remained in hospital care.
The two men were arrested after officers responded to Jersey’s Cafe and found McNeary in the business’ parking lot suffering from bullet wounds. Police reported that the shooting occurred after a verbal dispute between Overton and McNeary during a private party inside the bar spilled into the parking lot where the shots were fired.
Police said it was undetermined what the altercation was about.
Witnesses on the scene provided officers with a description of the two men and the Ford Taurus they fled the scene in after the shooting occurred. Within about 10 minutes, police said, officers located the vehicle on Blackiston Mill Road and made a traffic stop. Smith was driving the car during the stop, police said, and Overton, the only other passenger in the car, was in the passenger seat.
During a search of the vehicle, officers located a 9-milimeter pistol under the passenger seat of the car. Police said confirmation was made that the firearm had been recently fired.
Smith was preliminarily charged by Clarksville police with possession of a handgun by a violent felon, a class B felony.
Overton has been preliminarily charged with attempted murder, a class A felony, aggravated battery, a class B felony, criminal recklessness with a weapon, a class C felony, and possession of a handgun by a violent felon, a class B felony.
