CHARLESTOWN —
The Clark County 4-H Fair in July was widely regarded a success by its organizers, but inclement weather struck down one of the fair’s most profitable fundraisers when the tractor pull failed to gain traction amid electrical storms.
This Saturday, 4-H officials are hoping to make up for the tractor pull’s cancellation with its inaugural 4-H Barn Dance and Dinner at the arena on the Clark County 4-H Fairgrounds in Charlestown.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” 4-H Leader Missy Stephans said.
The steak dinner will be served from 6-8 p.m. with steaks provided by the Cattleman Association. Square dancing will be called by Tim Carman between 7:30-8:30 p.m., and the Rachel Timberlake Band will take the stage to close out the evening from 9-11 p.m.
Silent auction items will be available to bid on throughout the evening, including gift cards for everything from aromatherapy to pest control, highlighted by six tickets to the Indiana University homecoming football game against Michigan State.
Proceeds from the event will be used to replenish the Community Foundation of Southern Indiana-Clark County 4-H Scholarship Fund.
The idea for the barn dance came up when the county extension faced a serious budget shortfall, but there wasn’t time to plan the event. The extension is in a better place financially this year, but funds are needed for the scholarships, which is an area that has suffered as belts have tightened.
“If we’re successful with our activities, we’re going to be able, hopefully, to add a few more scholarships for our youngsters that are tenured 4-Hers,” said Bob Allen, Purdue University county extension director.
Through the fund, 4-H members who meet the qualifications and are chosen can receive $500 toward college.
“It’s an incentive for young people to stay in 4-H longer, if they know at the end that there will be opportunities for them to further their education,” Allen said.
