BORDEN — Henryville shot 55 percent from the field in the first half, outrebounded Lanesville 28-23, and held Eagles’ star Bryant Conder to a season-low nine points in the Class A, Sectional 62 championship game on Saturday night.
While those numbers would normally be a recipe for success, the Hornets also turned the ball over 18 times — 12 in the first half — and Nick Hammond more than made up for Conder’s off night with a game- and career-high 27 points in Lanesville’s 65-43 victory.
“He was getting wide-open looks and he knocked them down,” Henryville coach Perry Hunter said of Hammond. “He’s a great player.”
“All year, we’ve had kids step up, and Nick is one of them,” Lanesville coach Mikel Miller said.
Hammond got the Eagles started early, scoring nine points in the first quarter, hitting four of his first five shots. In the initial quarter, the Eagles made 8-of-14 field goals, while the Hornets attempted just four shots because of seven turnovers and trailed 22-8 at the end of one quarter.
“At the start of the game, they shot very well,” Hunter said. “They played with a lot of confidence the rest of the game.”
The Hornets got within seven points in the second quarter, but a late Hammond bucket gave the Eagles a 27-17 lead at the break.
After a Dylan Wolf hoop to open the third quarter, Lanesville went on a 11-6 run to distance itself from the Hornets. The Eagles then broke it open early in the final period, outscoring Henryville 19-2 over the first five minutes of the period.
“We got to the basket, and we got to the free throw line a lot,” Miller said. “When you do that, it’s always helpful.”
“They were ready to tonight,” Hunter said of the Eagles. “When we got down, I think we lost some confidence.”
Taylor Weeks led the Hornets with 11 points and seven rebounds. He was the only Hornet in double figures.
Despite being held to nine points, Conder did finish with three rebounds, two steals, two assists and four blocked shot.
“He still did a lot of good things,” Miller said. “He made a lot of big plays tonight.”
Chris Gayheart added 13 points and three boards for Lanesville, which will face Northeast Dubois in Saturday's Loogootee Regional.

Highland Hills’ seventh-grade boys and Parkview’s eighth-graders each won Clark-Floyd Tournament championships Thursday at Silver Creek Middle School.
