ROUNDUP: Dragons take out frustration on Madison

Pioneers, Hornets earn victories

The Silver Creek boys’ basketball team took a few weeks worth of frustration out on visiting Madison on Friday, thumping the Cubs 70-44 and snapping a four-game losing streak.

Cody Jackson led four Dragons in double figures with a game-high 21 points for Silver Creek, which won for the first time this calendar year.

“We’ve talked about a lot of things and went back and watched some of the games we played at the start of the year,” said Dragons coach John Bradley. “The guys took it upon themselves to come out of this and play well and set ourselves up for a strong finish to the season.”

Anthony Everage had 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds in the win for Silver Creek, which also got 13 points and 10 assists from Michael Bradley. Grant Meyer added 10 for the Dragons.

Silver Creek (8-6) will begin a four-game Mid-Southern Conference road trip next Friday when it travels to Salem.

• Pioneers clamp down on CAI: Visiting Providence blanked Christian Academy of Indiana in the first quarter as it defeated the Warriors, 42-31.

Senior guard Bryce Very had a game-high 19 points for the Pioneers (7-6), who won their fourth straight overall and fifth in their past six games.

Chris Carruthers scored 13 in the loss for the Warriors (1-14).

Providence will host New Albany next Friday. CAI will travel to Rock Creek Christian on Tuesday.

• Hornets survive Hockenbury’s big night: Henryville overcame a second-half scoring spree by South Central’s Chip Hockenbury as it scored a 61-52 win over the Rebels at Furnish Gymnasium.

Three players reached double figures for the Hornets, who snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory. Steven Mayfield led Henryville with 16 and senior Kyle Robertson nailed three 3-pointers to finish with 15 points. D.J. Carlson had 12 in the win for Henryville (9-7, 2-2 Southern Athletic Conference).

The win came despite Hockenbury and a 3-point shooting barrage by the visitors. Hockenbury had 25 of his points after halftime and the Rebels as a team hit nine shots from behind the arc in the loss.

“They went crazy in the second half, but we were steady,” said Hornet coach Perry Hunter. “We were really effective at the free-throw line late in the game, and we maintained our lead throughout their rallies.”

Henryville will travel to Crothersville next Friday.

• Mustangs lose on road: Switzerland County overcame a 31-point night from New Washington’s Devin Freels as the host Pacers beat the Mustangs, 71-64.

Senior big men Brennan Bragg (23) and Travis Tackett (22) combined for 45 points and the Pacers outrebounded the Mustangs 30-11 overall in the game.

“(Switzerland County) had two of the best players that we have faced this season,” said New Wash coach Jonathan May. “We struggled to get rebounds at key times. But overall I felt like our effort was solid. We just missed a chance at making some key plays down the stretch.”

Drake Krohn had 14 points in the loss for the Mustangs (5-9), who will host Lanesville next Friday.
