CHARLESTOWN — What excitement that may have been in the air at the Bill Dunn Sports Arena on Friday as Class 2A No. 1 Brownstown came to town didn’t stay around long. The Braves put the Pirates on the ropes early, cruised for a bit and then threw a knockout punch in the third quarter in turning back the Pirates, 58-38.
Brownstown (13-0, 6-0 Mid-Southern Conference) came out blazing as it took an early 16-2 lead. Two free throws by Aaron Daniel and a basket by Tim Hall pulled Charlestown (7-6, 2-3) to within 16-6 ending the quarter and the Pirates were not out of it as they trailed 28-16 at halftime.
Brownstown then ran away with it in the third quarter, outscoring Charlestown 13-2 as the Pirates hit only 1-of-9 shots in the period.
“They punched us in the mouth early, and no one likes that with the No. 1 team coming in here,” said Charlestown coach Sean Smith. “Our younger kids were aggressive in the last quarter and Tim did a good job on the boards, but that was about it. Getting down early took us right out of our game plan.”
Charlestown came in to the game knowing that to be successful it was going to have to contain the Braves’ star center, 6-foot-8 Taylor Wischmeier. The Pirates “held” him to 14 points and 10 rebounds, but that was nowhere near enough according to Smith.
“Our objective was to stop him — try to get him in foul trouble,” Smith said. “But he had a big game defensively either blocking or altering shots. And when you have a guy that can do that, plus have other guys pressure your perimeter shooters, it’s tough.”
“We got off to a great start tonight,’ said Brownstown coach David Benter. “We were making shots, our movement was good and we were getting easy baskets inside. But then we became too relaxed and nonchalant. From that point on, it was a tie game until halftime.”
Brownstown placed four in double figures, led by Michael Leitzman with 15 points. Jalen Snodgrass and Trey DeHart each added 10.
“That’s pleasing, four guys in double figures,” Benter said. “Taylor struggled offensively, but had a huge presence on defense. The other guys really picked it up.
“And as far as the No. 1 ranking, that seems to have more of an effect on our opponents than us, because they all want to came out with their ‘A’ game. Right now, the No. 1 ranking means nothing.”
Charlestown only placed one in double figures as Joe Wilson finished with 13 points. Hall did grab a game-high 12 rebounds.
“We can’t dwell on this one,” Smith said. “We have to go on the road (Saturday) night at a tough place to play (Mitchell). Their record won’t indicate it, but they had some kids injured who are now back, so they’ll be better. We just need to pick ourselves up by our boot straps and do the things that we need to do to win games.”
