NORTH VERNON —
A week after being shut down by Columbus East, Jeffersonville put up 67 points — 53 of which came from its offense — in just 11 minutes and 50 seconds in a 67-47 regular-season ending victory over Jennings County.
The win — and a Bedford North Lawrence loss — gave the 6-3 Red Devils a second-place finish in the Hoosier Hills Conference.
Tyler Fridley completed 7 of 14 passes for 206 yards and four touchdowns for Jeff. He also had a 25-yard touchdown run. Austin Hines led the Red Devil rushing attack with 81 yards on 10 carries and he scored three times.
Jeff ran just 36 offensive plays and scored on eight of them, but it was the Devil defense that got them on the board first when Eric Hughes intercepted a Ryan Cowan pass and returned it 35 yards.
Two Hines touchdown runs sandwiched the Panthers’ only first-quarter score — a Tommy Taylor two-yard run — and the Red Devils led 19-6 after one quarter.
Jordan Muirhead got the Devils a special teams touchdown when he returned a blocked punt 30 yards for a score. Fridley then threw his first of two touchdown strikes to Jacquari Chandler and Jeff led 32-6.
Jennings (1-8, 1-5 HHC) cut the Devil lead to 32-19 before Fridley’s 25-yard scamper.
Jeff outscored the Panthers 21-7 on three Fridley TD passes to put the game away in the third quarter. Fridley connected with Dalton Adkins from 45 yards out, Ricky Embry on a 36-yard pass and Chandler for a 34-yard scored and the Red Devils led 60-26 at the end of three quarters
Jennings scored 21 unanswered points to open the fourth quarter, but Hines capped the scoring on a 37-yard run.
Jeff will meet 5-4 New Albany, which beat Floyd Central 28-27 in overtime on Friday, in its Class 5A Sectional 8 opener next Friday.
