MADISON —
Lonnie Oldham is used to coaching from the sidelines, but he got his first taste of victory from the dugout as the Jeffersonville baseball team downed host Madison, 8-4 on Tuesday.
“We hit the ball well tonight,” Oldham said. “We had a couple fielding errors and that cost us a couple runs, but overall I thought we hit the ball pretty well and did the things you need to do to win a game.”
Oldham is serving as the team’s interim coach for the rest of the year after coach Matthew Rigsby abruptly resigned on Monday.
“I guess I met their needs,” Oldham said. “They called me into the office around 1 o’clock and offered me the job, and I told them I would do it.”
Oldham, the Red Devils’ football coach, said he does not have experience coaching baseball, though he did play in high school. He complimented the team of assistant coaches on the squad and indicated he would rely on their expertise.
“They do a good job, so they’re still doing what they do,” Oldham said.
The Red Devils were powered by Isaac Crafton, who slugged two doubles and a home run in a 4-for-5 performance at the plate. The Jeff catcher raked two RBI.
Also for Jeff, Drew Ellis went 3-for-4 with one RBI. Dalton Conway and Nick Gallagher each blasted triples in the game.
Aaron Wenger recorded his second win on the season.

Christian Ensley keyed a five-run Providence first inning with a two-run single to right, and added another RBI single later in the contest.
Nick Campbell and Andrew Hunt also added RBI singles.
“We had some nice production throughout the lineup,” Providence coach Scott Hornung said. “The positive thing about tonight was once we got the runners on base, we were able to cash in and produce some runs, where we’ve left some runners on base in some previous games. So it was a step forward for us tonight.”
Ensley also got the win for Providence on the mound.
Providence (11-10) visits Scottsburg today.
• Floyd Central throttles Heritage Hills: After falling behind 2-0 through three innings, Floyd Central’s offense erupted in a 13-5 win at Heritage Hills on Tuesday.
The Highlanders racked up 16 hits in the victory, with the floodgates first opening in the top of the fifth, where the visitors tacked on six runs.

But Kruer helped his own cause with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate that included three RBI. Ethan Little went 2-for-3 with a double four RBI, while Garrett Vick was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
The Borden defense did not commit an error in the contest for the third consecutive game.
“I always thought this team would be good defensively, and they’re getting confidence now,” Borden coach Brian Agnew said.

• Charlestown turns back Henryville: After spotting Henryville a run in the top of the third inning, Charlestown roared back for three in the home half and held on for a 3-1 victory at home on Tuesday.
“I thought we played pretty well. It was kind of a slow game,” Charlestown coach Kevin Zollman said. “There wasn’t a whole lot of energy from either team.”

Caitlin McKinley led the Braves’ bats, going 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Borden’s Shelbie Farvour was the winning pitcher.
“Our team played really well today,” Braves’ head coach Alex Spainhour said. “I was extremely proud of our girls. We have been working on putting a full game together and cutting down on the errors, and they did that this evening. They still had a couple moments that definitely could have been better, but they immediately bounced back. They have taken some huge strides and are improving daily.”
